Ensemble

One of the key components of the MMC program is a suite of performance ensembles.

These provide professionally challenging opportunities for delegates to rehearse with a renowned conductor, play high-level repertoire and perform at the closing concert. Delegates who nominate for performance groups will be selected by the Conference Committee in conjunction with the conductor in creating a balanced ensemble.

Members of performance ensembles will receive music prior to conference and be expected to have sufficiently prepared prior to rehearsal.

Performance ensembles are available only to full time delegates. Part time delegates may be able to access pedagogy ensembles according to the conference program.

For QMEC 2025, we will again offer a selection of pedagogy ensembles, the purpose of which will be for participants to enjoy professional development in conducting and ensemble pedagogy, refine skills on an alternate instrument, and provide additional opportunities for delegates to be involved in the ensembles experience. These ensembles will not be performing at the closing concert but may instead be offered opportunities to perform during a session or be observed by other delegates during a rehearsal.

From 2025, these will be programmed at different times that do not clash with other conference sessions. Each of the ensembles has multiple rehearsal sessions.

Rehearsal sessions will run simultaneously (e.g. performance ensemble rehearsals run at the same time), though it is possible for delegates to nominate for more than one ensemble (i.e. a delegate could take part in a performance ensemble and a pedagogy ensemble).

We encourage all delegates to bring instrument/s and get involved in an ensemble throughout the conference.

Performance ensemble nominations will be reviewed from early April, and allocations made accordingly; nominations may be considered for performance ensembles when received after this time, pending availability.

Performance and Pedagogy ensemble nominations

If you would like to nominate for QMEC2025 ensemble/s please indicate below.

A maximum of 3 ensemble nominations may be submitted.

What is your preference for involvement in ensembles at QMEC 2025?

For which of the performance ensembles would you like to nominate?

In creating a balanced ensemble, it may not be possible for all delegates to be accepted into their first choice of ensemble. If you are not selected for your first choice,  would you like to be considered for another ensemble?

For which of the pedagogy ensembles would you like to nominate?

In creating balanced ensembles, if there is a need for your instrument/expertise in a performance ensemble, would you be willing to participate in that ensemble instead of your nominated pedagogy ensemble?

Choir

Which part would you most like to sing/play in the Choir?

If the selected repertoire calls for a soloist, would you be willing to be considered for such?

How would you best rate your level of choral experience?

Do you consider yourself to be confident and capable at sight-singing repertoire at a reasonable level?

This does not preclude you from the ensemble but is helpful knowledge for the conductor's planning.

String Orchestra

On which instrument will you play for this String Orchestra ensemble nomination?

What is your current level of performance on this instrument?

What is your current performance (last 3 years) experience relevant to the above nomination?

Delegates are encouraged to bring their own instrument, but we realise this may not be possible if you need to travel by plane. Please indicate below if you would like the MMC team to contact you to discuss the possibility of a loan instrument. A nil response indicates you are bringing your own instrument.

Wind Symphony

What is your current level of performance on this instrument?

What is your current performance (last 3 years) experience relevant to the above nomination?

2nd Nomination

You may like to nominate for a 2nd ensemble for the following reasons:

  • In case you don’t get into your 1st nomination.
E.g. you nominated for trumpet in Performance Big Band and would like a back up nomination to be for French horn in Performance Wind Symphony OR if you nominated for viola in Pedagogy String Orchestra but would also consider (as your 2nd nomination) double bass in Pedagogy String Orchestra.
  • You would like to nominate for a 2nd ensemble as well as that of your 1st nomination.
E.g. you would like to be in both a Performance AND a Pedagogy ensemble)

With this in mind, would you like to make a 2nd nomination?
